Shekhar Eye Research has launched a new line of jewelry—eye jewelry. MSNBC reports that eye surgeon Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan found the inspiration for his eye jewelry when his wife had diamonds implanted in her teeth. He concluded that people might also enjoy ornamenting their eyes.
So, Chawan designed a very thin ring of gold studded with 18 diamonds and embedded it into a contact lens, He uses the Boston Scleral lenses, contacts usually worn by persons with severe eye illnesses, to hold the jewelry part of the lenses in such a way that it does not touch on the cornea. He insists that the method is “very safe.”
While public reaction is mixed, Chawan believes that when celebrities begin to wear his La SERTM eye jewelry, demand will soar. However, the baubles are clearly not for the cash strapped; they cost more than $15,000 a pair!
